Welcome to our new web site. I am pleased to have this new forum to be able to share the very latest MRF news and other information that may be of interest to those who visit our site.

On October 4-6, the entire MRF management and scientific team were joined by our Scientific Advisory Board, several volunteers and supporters, and a number of special guests for our second annual research meeting. The meeting was held at the Montreal Neurological Institute and hosted by MRF Principal Investigator Dr. David Colman, and his able staff.

This meeting, as well as the two other research review meetings held each year, are an integral part of our research model. They are focused and informative and provide an extraordinary opportunity for our scientific team to engage in real-time dialogue about the science, its progress, and the process. They also provide important guidance on moving forward and staying on track toward our research goals. These meetings are not for the light at heart. They are serious scientific meetings with back-to-back presentations from each of the principal investigators, poster sessions presented by graduate students and post docs, and guest presentations from relevant neuroscience and business experts.

And while non-scientists may not have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the science to glean the details of these discussions, what all attendees took away was the intense commitment and collaboration of our scientific team and the sense of momentum that continues to inspire confidence in our ability to achieve our goals.

Why are these meetings so important? Though not part of the traditional model of medical research, ongoing peer-review is integral to MRF’s accelerated research model. Without such reviews, our ability to capitalize on successes by quickly pursuing those avenues and adjusting course when experiments fail or produce unexpected results would be seriously compromised. That would translate to time lost in ultimately delivering effective patient treatments.

I hope you will let me know if there are particular topics that you would like to see addressed in this column. Email me at johnson@myelinrepair.org and I will do my best to respond to them.

Sincerely,
